During those critical years, his assignments often brought him to the Fulda Gap and other sensitive places along the East West border. Also, for various reasons at different times, he traveled into East Berlin and other East Germany locations. He also spent time in Moscow and Leningrad and was an eye witness to many facets of the Cold War. He personally witnessed the food shortages and black market activities in those Russian cities. When the Berlin Wall began to crack, he made a couple trips to Berlin to physically participate in the Wall's destruction. There, with sledge hammer in hand, he did his part in destroying the Wall and rejoiced as it came tumbling down.
