Alongside that work, he created and self-published a number of non-fiction books: \"The Tri-X Chronicles\" (containing his 1960s photographs), \"Mailmen's Dog Stories\" (an anthology he edited), and two bicycle touring guides (\"Crossing the U.S.A. the Short Way\" and \"Bicycling California's Spine\"). He originated a third guide, \"The Pacific Crest Bicycle Trail,\" which was published by Bittersweet Publishing. He modified and further researched the PCBT for the Adventure Cycling Association, which mapped it and renamed it the Sierra Cascades bicycle touring route.
