by Hans Sedlmayr (Author), Lorenzo Venneri (Translator)

We are all under the gun of technological progress. This book offers a much needed human centered perspective. For those not yet enlightened to the hazards of technics, it provides an introduction. For those already familiar, Sedlmayr provides hope and a plan forward. Sedlmayr's proposal is a middle ground between technics and the human being, with technology used for the benefit of mankind rather than the other way around.

Hans Sedlmayr's booklet of lectures on technology and the human being is much needed in these times of accelerating technological change. While there is tremendous opportunity to improve ociety and the environment, there is nowadays a clear and rising response against the unmitigated application of technology to all spheres of life, which has degraded the human being and given rise to the various crisis of our time from the architectural horrors of our cities and modern art to the various crises in meaning, education, and health.

This is the first complete English translation of Gefahr und Hoffnung des Technischen Zeitalters by Hans Sedlmayr, first published in 1970 by the Salzburg publisher Otto Müller Verlag. The booklet contains the text from four lectures given by the great Austrian art historian during the late 50s and early 60s.
