Amor Dei: A Study of the Religion of St. Augustine was first published as the Hulsean Lectures for 1938 when John Burnaby was a classics Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Author Biography

John Burnaby (1891-1978) won a scholarship in classics from Haileybury College to attend Trinity College, Cambridge, obtaining a first class degree in the Tripos. He joined the Army in 1914, learning of his award of a Fellowship at Trinity while in the Dardanelles. Wounded on the Somme, he returned to Trinity and served successively as Junior Dean, Junior Bursar, Tutor, Senior Tutor, and, after ordination in 1941, as Dean of Chapel. He was appointed Regius Professor of Divinity in 1952, retiring in 1958.
