Ark of Aten, Egypt's Sacred Solar Barque - Paperback

by Ben Van Kerkwyk (Author)

The sun rose over Egypt every day-but for one pharaoh, sunrise wasn't enough. When Akhenaten elevated the Aten from solar symbol to solar absolute, he didn't just promote a deity. He attempted to rewrite reality: replacing hidden sanctuaries with open sky, sidelining powerful priesthoods, and turning light itself into the ultimate sacred authority.

The Solar Barque follows the most haunting idea in Egyptian religion: that the sun must travel, struggle, and survive the night to return at dawn. Moving through the Amarna rupture and beyond, this book explores how solar worship shaped kingship, ritual, art, and the ancient fear that order can fail. Written for readers who love history with mythic depth, it reveals why Egypt's "boat of the sun" was never mere symbolism-it was the civilization's blueprint for endurance.
