by Hilary Trott (Contribution by), Walter Grainge White Frgs (Author)

This is a book combining two publications of my Grandfather, Walter Grainge White, written either at the time, or about the experiences of it, when he and my Grandmother were Missionaries to the Makuchis in the early years of the twentieth century. The Makuchis were a tribe of Indians in the hinterland of what was then British Guiana, who were, my grandfather deduced from their complex language, descended from some ancient civilisation.
The "At Home with the Makuchis" was intented to be merely a precursor to a fuller volume at a later date, which project unfortunately never reached fruition. This was written after the events described. The Rapo-Nǔnë Letters were written at the time they were living with the Makuchis, and were a series of letters that were combined into a small booklet, and sent to his many correspondents.
In them both you will find a wealth of detail about the customs, conditions, and habits of the Makuchis of the time, as well as sometimes critical observations regarding the "powers that be" of the time, in both eclesiastical and government areas.
