by Nida Mahmoed (Author)

Broken Women of the Mountains is a testimonial poetry collection exploring the interior lives of women navigating tradition, memory, and the enduring bonds between mothers and daughters. Through lyrical meditation and contemplative verse, Nida Mahmoed preserves oral histories and lived experiences that rarely find expression in contemporary literature.

Originally published in 2009 as a limited paperback edition when Mahmoed was sixteen, this eBook release makes available her early work chronicling women's stories across generations. The collection is structured in two movements, each exploring themes of maternal devotion, longing for education and opportunity, and the quiet resilience required to maintain dignity through life's profound challenges.

Mahmoed's poetry emerged from direct testimonies-including the account of a young girl whose desire for learning was met with tragedy, a narrative that compelled the poet toward a lifelong commitment to preserving women's unspoken truths through verse. Broken Women of the Mountains invites readers into landscapes where hope and loss coexist, where the relationships between women carry the weight of unspoken histories, and where poetry becomes an act of remembrance and grace.

This collection represents the genesis of Mahmoed's literary philosophy of "meditative testimony"-poetry that honors lived experience, creates sanctuary through language, and insists on the preservation of stories that deserve witness. Through restrained lyricism and compassionate observation, Mahmoed crafts a work of enduring literary and emotional resonance.
