His abstract paintings are inspired by his studies of nature, history, and music. His work and teaching carries on an approach to painting and seeing the world that comes down from Cezanne, through the work of Hans Hofmann and Hofmann's student Vaclav Vytlacil, who O'Cain studied with for many years.
