Is your organization's new hire safety orientation (NHSO) an empowering and meaningful learning experience or a "borientation," an overwhelming torrent of generic slideshows and forgettable off-the-shelf safety videos?
Too often, NHSO is reduced to a rushed and uninspired formality. Behind this ineffective approach lies a darker truth: new employees face a significantly higher risk of workplace injury, with more than one-third of workplace injuries occurring within a worker's first year. This results in millions of lost workdays, rising workers' compensation costs, and real human consequences for workers and their families. These alarming statistics demand that organizations rethink how they introduce new employees to safety.
This book challenges the status quo by demonstrating how safety orientations can be both memorable and effective. Drawing from real-world successes across different industries globally, it offers a practice-derived roadmap for OHS practitioners seeking to transform their organization's NHSO from a borientation or compliance chore into an insightful, transformative learning experience. The book features proven field-tested tips, tools, and techniques to help safety professionals design programs tailored to their organization's unique needs, risks, and workforce. Through step-by-step guidance, readers of this title will discover how even the most uninspired NHSO can be turned into a vibrant, inspiring event that not only meets compliance standards but creates a strategic investment in worker safety, well-being, and measurable business value.
Delivering Effective New Hire Safety Orientation is an essential resource for occupational health and safety professionals, human resources personnel, trainers, educators, and business leaders committed to reducing risk, improving engagement, and building safer workplaces from day one.
