The Santhal, one of the schedule tribes of the Jharkhand state. They are found in the districts of Hazaribagh, Singhbhum, Santhal-Pragana, Giridih, Dhanbad, Ranchi and Bhagalpur, Purnea, Sharsha and Munger in Bihar. Their language is Santhali they also know Hindi and Bengali. They occupy first position among the tribes of Jharkhand. In 1850 A.D. with the advice of Fr. Gossnur the Christen Priest started to study about the custom, culture and religion of all tribes to aid the British Government. A British Bureaucrat also joined the mission. In between only one Indian author S. C. Roy, who was advocate by profession was also co-operated by them. The present book is a very critical comparative study and presents situation with rare data about the 32 types of tribes according to scheduled list of Jharkhand State. It is a useful book for scholars, N.G.Os, state and Union Government offices to solve the socio-economic problems of the country.
Author Biography
Dr. Diwakar Minz, M.A. LL.B., Ph.D., D.Litt., is reader in the Department of History of Ranchi University. Member of International Labour Organization, Board of Governor of IIMC in Kolkata, ISMK in Calicut, Hindi Salahkar Samiti of the Government of India, and Wild Life Advisory Board. Dr. Minz has to his credit a book and several research articles. He has also been a member of several important organizations.
Dr. Delo Mai Hansda is M.A. Ph. D. (Economics). Teaching in Mandar College, Mandar Ranchi Jharkhand. Participated in many National and State Level Seminar at Orissa, Shanti Niketan (W.B.) Jharkhand and many research articles, guiding research work specially about Jharkhand and Tribes. She knows allmost all language of Tribes accept Oraon Tribes including Bangli, Oriya and English, Hindi, Nagpuria also. She is member of Indian History Congress and Bihar research society.
