by Isabel R. Vandervelde (Illustrator), Isabel R. Vandervelde (Author)

This historical novel follows the adventurous life of George Galphin, head trader to the Creek Indians from 1737 till his death in 1780, a man of honesty, Galphin loved women and also loved the children they gave him. His six "wives" gave him nine children of the three races--white, African, and Indian. He loved them all But his work for the Colonial side during the Revolutionary War brought about the loss of his great fortune, so that his children did not get what he wanted for them. His children and grandchildren live in the story too, with his grandson, Thomas Galphin Holmes, becoming the first licensed physician in Alabama.
