In response to the Pharisees' question - "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" - Jesus cited both love of God and love of neighbour (Matthew 22:34-40) as the greatest commandment. Love is so very important this it is also the first fruit of the Holy Spirit.

We all like and want to receive but some people never give, give little or give grudgingly. However, Luke 6:38 reveals three extremely important principles about true love of God and our fellow human beings.

Firstly, true love necessitates reciprocity. Therefore, you cannot be a taker only in this life - i.e., be focused on receiving only or what you can get (self-interested love). Secondly, the correct order in the reciprocal relationship of love is to give first and then you will receive. Thirdly, if you focus more on giving, rather than receiving, you will eventually receive more than you gave - "...good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over..." (Luke 6:38).

Consequently, this second devotional in the Catholic Bible Books Devotional Series (c) appropriately focuses on the greatest commandment - LOVE. It is a fitting continuation of the series which began with WISDOM.
