by Greg Smrdel (Author)

Every storm has a beginning.

Hurricane Izzy starts as nothing more than a distant tropical wave rolling off the coast of Africa. At first, she's easy to ignore. But as Izzy cuts a relentless path across the Atlantic, she grows faster, stronger-and unmistakably aimed at the Outer Banks.

As the storm approaches, lives begin to unravel.

For one man, the coming hurricane mirrors the quiet devastation already inside him. Before Izzy ever makes landfall, he has lost both his dog and the woman he loved. With nowhere left to run-emotionally or physically-he faces the storm head-on, alongside neighbors, strangers, and newfound friends who refuse to abandon one another when conditions turn severe.

What unfolds is not just a story about wind and water-but about people.

Hurricane Izzy is a powerful, character-driven novel about:

  • Loss and resilience in the face of overwhelming change

  • How communities form under pressure

  • Unexpected friendships forged during crisis

  • The emotional cost-and quiet strength-of riding out the storm

Though Hurricane Izzy is fictional, her force is authentic. The storm is a composite of real hurricanes the author experienced while living on the Outer Banks, lending the story a grounded realism that captures both the terror and the strange calm that comes with waiting it out.

Set against barrier islands where evacuation routes disappear and decisions matter, this novel explores what happens when nature strips life down to its essentials-and what remains when the winds finally die down.

Some storms destroy.
Others reveal who we really are.
