This publication presents material for chemistry teachers on a variety of aspects of the UK chemical and pharmaceutical industries in the late 1990s. it covers the economic dimension of the industries, some environmental concerns and constraints, and the issue of scaling up processes from the laboratory bench to full scale production. It is designed to be read by teachers to update themselves personally and also to be used by post-16 students (A-level, AS, Scottish Higher and GNVQ/GSVQ). There are questions in the text that deal with chemical principles which will be familiar to post-16 students but which are set in unfamiliar contexts.
