Elijah Brumfield was born in Randolph County Indiana in 1860. He lived his adult life farming in Jetmore, KS, where he married Roella Dutrow. They had four children, one of whom is the author of this book. Elijah became ill while working on the farm and died in 1898 at the age of 37, leaving his widow with four children, ages 8 months to 10 years old to raise and a farm to run. The children became orphans when their mother died 10 years later at the age of 47.
