Mercedes-Benz SLK R171 (2026 revised Edition). History, Specs & 30-page Buyer's Guide
When the second-generation SLK (R171) debuted in 2004, it didn't just replace its predecessor, it redefined the compact roadster. Inspired by the legendary SLR McLaren and Formula One engineering, the R171 brought aggressive styling, thundering V8 power, and refined luxury to the smaller sized roadster models.
This 2026 revised edition is the most comprehensive work on the R171, offering a deep dive into the history, technology, and ownership experience of one of Daimler-Benz's iconic creations.
What you will find in this edition:
-
The full history: From the initial 1994 concept that shocked the industry to the final R171 rolling off the assembly line in 2011.
-
Every model covered: Detailed profiles of the fuel-efficient four-cylinders, the silky-smooth 3.5L V6, and the brutal 5.4L SLK55 AMG.
-
Special editions & tuning: Insights into the rare "Edition 10," the "Grand Edition," and high-performance masterpieces from Brabus, Piecha, and Renntech.
-
Expanded 30-page buyer's guide: Now nearly twice its original size, this guide is your best defense against costly repairs. We cover everything from engine numbers and transmission codes to the infamous balance shaft sprocket issues and suspension wear.
-
The vario-roof masterclass: A dedicated chapter on the SLK's signature feature-how it works, how to maintain it, and how to fix common issues without breaking the bank.
-
Real-world ownership: Practical tips on maintenance, potential "hidden" software errors (like the SmartKey infrared issue), and how to preserve the value of your investment.
Written by an enthusiast for enthusiasts. Whether you are a long-time owner looking to understand your car better or a prospective buyer searching for the perfect R171, this book provides the technical depth and emotional storytelling you need.
The SLK R171 may have been the "compact" member of the lineup, but its ambition and engineering were second to none. Discover why this roadster remains a titan of the used car market and a future classic today.
