by Shifang Yang (Author)

[A Full-Color Ethnographic Anthology of Miao Women in Southwest China] This volume presents a rare and intimate oral history of the Miao women in the remote border ranges of Guangxi and Guizhou. Authored by acclaimed writer Shifang Yang and translated by Bob Song, New Voicesdocuments a unique linguistic and sociological phenomenon: how a group of marginalized women, once cut off from education, mastered Mandarin through a village night school and began writing poetry to reclaim their voices. Key Features for Academic Collections: Primary Source Material: Contains original diaries, folk songs, and newly composed verse that reflect the transition from oral to written culture. Visual Ethnography: Illustrated with full-color photography documenting traditional Miao textiles, village architecture, and daily life in Southwest China. Interdisciplinary Value: An essential resource for researchers in Gender Studies, Linguistic Anthropology, Rural Sociology, and Chinese Minority Studies.
