by Douglas Thiel (Author)

This book is designed for an Introduction to Philosophy course in higher education. It is divided into six major themes which comprise on-going dialogues in the history of philosophy. Additionally, this book explores the three most prominent moral theories used in modern philosophy to examine a wide range of contemporary political and social issues. It is written in an easy to understand, conversational style. While designed for use in higher education it would be a way for anyone who has been interested in what philosophy has to "say" on a wide range of big questions, a chance to glimpse into this world.

Author Biography

Douglas Thiel has instructed philosophy courses for 20 years. He has an unusual background since he served as a Marine in Vietnam and worked in civilian law enforcement. As a philosophy instructor, he sees philosophy as a living enterprise that travels back to the early Greek philosophers who searched for the foundation of knowledge and asked the important questions about "how we ought to live". This process has continued throughout history as different generations have added to the conversation. Thiel spent many years of his adult life outside of the walls of academia and feels a powerful need to incorporate pieces of the historical dialogue in philosophy into the moral dilemmas that all of us face in our daily lives.
