Uncle Joe had an adventurous spirit and loved to face the unknown, experience new things, and visit new places. He was always conjuring up some kind of fishing or hunting trip, and in the late fall, he began thinking about going down past Thomas City to an area on the Wacissa River known locally as The Big Woods. The Big Woods was a paradise whose beauty was something to behold and he thought it would be good to take his son, Arthur, and his nephew, Doc, with him. But this particular trip turned into an unexpected adventure when they encountered moonshiners and kidnappers and there seemed to be danger lurking behind every tree in The Big Woods.
