by Mahmoud El-Bagoury (Author)

This book points out how Wole Soyinka portrays the African world in its post-colonial condition in some of his plays. Soyinka sees that the spirit of "oppositionality", which is essential for national liberation, requires the revolutionary acts against all the colonial ideologies. Soyinka exhorts the formerly colonized peoples to break away from the colonial mentality to eschew the neo-colonial colourings. Soyinka also urges all Africans to take up the utopian concepts of the post-independence era. He rejects the Negritude movement because he sees that it creates a black racism. Soyinka, furthermore, tackles the culture clash in some of his plays to show the necessity of cultural juxtaposition. He also opposes the postcolonial leaders who misuse power, thus diminishing the hope for change.
