Author Biography

Dr. Janet Mort, instead of retiring, went back to university for a PhD in Early Learning after a 40-year career as a primary teacher, principal and Superintendent of Schools. Her intentions were very specific - to understand why approximately 30% of our children do not succeed in primary classrooms and therefore struggle throughout the rest of their school careers without the opportunities afforded to children from literate preschool environments. Janet has been determined to find a way to meet the needs of struggling learners throughout her career and she has found it! She has aligned the most recent literacy research with her own years of experience. The result is a playful and joyful classroom literacy system that works, and she has the data to prove it. The results in over 100 demonstration classrooms have been outstanding: 90% of K to grade 2 children, in spite of high vulnerabilities, low socio-economic backgrounds, little previous literacy exposure and significant cultural differences are reading at grade level after two and three years in the project. Her previous book - Joyful Literacy Interventions: Part One (2014) - describes the research and how to apply it in classroom schedules and organization. This book - Putting on the Blitz (2016) is the companion book; it provides the data that demonstrates the success of the Joyful Literacy Intervention strategy.
