Must we repent to be saved? And what, exactly, is repentance?

Confusion about repentance and grace is the most significant problem facing the evangelical community today. Misunderstandings about these foundational doctrines are affecting Christians' personal walks as well as their understanding and sharing of the gospel.

Some evangelicals believe that saying God requires us to be repentant is teaching salvation by works. And according to common definitions of repentance, indeed that would be the case. The belief that it can't be necessary to repent has had at least some influence on the preaching in most congregations. For pastors often don't know how to boldly explain the Bible's teaching about repentance without inviting the charge they are preaching salvation by works.

This book carefully examines and clearly explains what the Scriptures say about repentance and grace using the language of the Bible-without attempting to represent or rely on (or even mention) the doctrines of any denomination or theological system. It shows, from many hundreds of references to the Scriptures, what repentance and grace mean to those who would come after Jesus.

It also contains a detailed description of what the Bible teaches saving faith is, and its link to the repentance which always accompanies this faith. It explains the basic relationships between them and the gospel, salvation, and sanctification, and conclusively shows that biblical repentance isn't a work. Nor does repentance include some level of proper remorse over past sins, but simply has to do with one's intentions going forward.

It shows how the Bible answers the two questions above:
  • Must we repent to be saved? Yes
  • And what, exactly, is repentance in the New Testament? A resolve to obey God

Scripture quotations are italicized (and also in red in color formats-not this black-and-white paperback version) so that readers may easily refer to those inspired words when evaluating what is said about them.
