The Reagan administration attempted to create a "coalition government" combining Reagan's conservative supporters with the East Coast establishment. However, Reagan had his own vision of American foreign policy and strongly disagreed with the establishment vision, especially the idea of "Detente" with the Soviet Union. In examining President Reagan's approach to the Taiwan issue, one sees how he circumvented the establishment and set up his own unique foreign policy.
