Charles Edwin Davis and Ruth Bachschmid wrote hundreds of letters to each other when they were driven apart by the events of World War II. Charlie first worked at a factory making military planes, then resigned and volunteered to become a pilot for the Army Air Corps. He flew cargo planes among South Pacific islands being liberated from Japanese invaders. Ruth stayed with her family in Austin, Texas, and kept working in several stores even after they married and he told her she could stop.
