Kathy A. McCarty devoted her life to bringing quality healthcare to the people of rural northwestern Zimbabwe. Shortly after her death in 2021, the country of Zimbabwe declared Sister Makate a National Hero for her successful efforts to combat HIV/AIDS at Chidamoyo Christian Hospital.

Kathy's friends remember her wit, resilience, determination, abiding faith, and love for her adopted country. They also recall the many hours spent around her table enjoying both familiar childhood dishes whipped up from scratch in her kitchen and the warmth of sadza and peanut butter.
