Sammie is sad because of loneliness but as he gradually meets other creatures of the jungle he finds he isn't alone. Despite each being a different creature they each find they all have something in common. As their friendship grows they realize they are no longer lonely and the differences don't matter.

The story tries to show children that differences do not have to lead to loneliness. Happiness grows as you overcome your sadness with friendships.
