Searching for Black Confederates and Finding Them - Paperback

by Wayne Jr. Pease (Author)

WHAT IF THE HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR IS INCOMPLETE? In Searching for Black Confederates and Finding Them, Wayne Pease Jr. takes readers into one of the most debated and controversial questions in Civil War history: whether men of color, both free and slave, served in combat and support roles within the Confederacy.
Drawing on extensive primary sources-including muster rolls, naval records, contemporary newspapers, Union soldier testimony, overlooked documentation, and postwar accounts-this provocative study invites readers to examine the evidence for themselves and reconsider what has been accepted, dismissed, or left unexplored.
Featuring references to historical voices such as Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, this book challenges readers, researchers, and Civil War buffs to look beyond the "expert" narratives and engage directly with the documentary record.
