Th
he supernatural world of Serbian folklore is populated by an extraordinary variety of beings.
Vampires, witches, dragons, spirits of the dead, dangerous creatures of the forests and waters, beings associated with disease and misfortune, and numerous other supernatural entities survived for generations in stories, customs, beliefs, and oral tradition.
Demonic Creatures of Serbian Mythology explores this remarkable and often disturbing part of Serbian traditional culture.
The mythology of the South Slavs remains far less familiar internationally than Greek, Norse, or Celtic mythology. Written evidence for the religion of the early Slavs is limited, making later folklore and ethnographic material particularly important for understanding how supernatural beliefs developed and survived among Serbian communities.
These traditions did not disappear with Christianization. Older beliefs continued alongside Christianity, sometimes changing their form and meaning and sometimes becoming incorporated into later folk religion. As a result, Serbian folklore preserved a complex supernatural world in which older mythological ideas, local traditions, Christian concepts, and centuries of storytelling existed side by side.
This book collects and organizes traditions concerning the demonic and supernatural beings of Serbian mythology, examining their characteristics, origins, behavior, powers, and relationships with human beings.
Some were feared. Some had to be avoided or appeased. Others could protect or punish. Many were connected with particular places, times of year, natural phenomena, death, illness, sexuality, family life, or the uncertain boundary between the living and the dead.
Together, these beings reveal a mythology shaped not only by imagination but by the fears, experiences, environment, and worldview of generations of people.
For readers interested in Slavic mythology, Serbian folklore, supernatural creatures, vampires, demons, spirits, Balkan mythology, and traditional folk beliefs, this book introduces a mythological world that remains largely unknown outside the Balkans.
