The Germans are stationed outside the city walls, choking the city and expecting surrender. Leningraders are starving with rations so small they are eating shoes. This winter is the worst in many years, people are burning their furniture to stay warm. Spies are everywhere and the Communist Party is telling people they are winning. Weekly bombs have broken every window in the apartment and the Neva is frozen solid. Her sister is killed, her brother is like a three year old, and all she wants to do is be singing on stage again.
