by Ron Telford (Author)
This book, Southern Waters, is the third book in a series written by Ron Telford who sailed on various trawlers from the mid-1960 to mid-80s. During this period the fishing fleet had nowhere to fish. The result was that most of these fine fishing vessels were broken up for scrapped. This is my story working firstly in the Mount Challenger and secondly, a little later, in the SAFCO Endeavour. Both of these vessels were called factory vessels which processed mainly squid and other species, fishing in the Southern Atlantic near the Falkland Islands. The sacrifices made to continue employment as a fishermen were many. Being at sea, away from loved ones, for up to 3 months at a time was very difficult. Although very important to me, family life suffered when sadly I missed many of my children's 'special occasions' whilst at sea. I tried to make it up to them whist I was at home.I have now retired as a tour guide, although I still have the opportunity to work the odd day as I enjoy passing on my experiences to the public. I hope you enjoy my account of life at sea. Unfortunately, many fishermen went to sea but never return. The sacrifice they made was ALL FOR THE PRICE OF FISH. They should NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
