Author Biography

Garry Hemphill fits the classic definition of a lay minister. For over thirty years he has volunteered in para-church organizations and has served in various church leadership positions, all the while engaged in full-time secular employment. At age 18, he had a personal encounter with God while reading Proverbs 23:26 'My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways' (NJKV). Since that day, he has dedicated his heart to God, and his life to the study of God's Word. While Mr. Hemphill is grateful for the privilege of attending Bible School, his conviction is that the greatest training - equally available to every believer - is personal meditation on God's Word, while yielded to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This is a conviction he models to others through the freshness and depth of his insight into the Scriptures. Mr. Hemphill's commitment to the growth of the Body of Christ is evidenced through the teaching gift that he employs regularly through the local church, as well as ministry trips throughout the British Isles. He wrote his first book Beyond Soulish Christianity in 1999, and has been a special guest on radio programs as a means of challenging a wider Christian audience to deepen their devotion to Christ. Mr. Hemphill has been married for 34 years to his best friend, Mary. They have two daughters: Amanda and Alyssa, both grown. The Hemphills currently live in the metro area of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
