The Holocaust, also called Shoah, Shoa or Shoah (Hebrew: השואה Ha-Shoah), was the systematic persecution and genocide of Jews by the Nazis and their allies before and during World War II. During the domination by Nazi Germany, between 5.1 and 6 million European Jews were murdered. Most of the killing took place in death camps in gas chambers and in mass executions by Einsatzgruppen.
