The correspondence highlights Wharton's well developed understanding of the 'sociology of text' in the early twentieth century, casting new light on Wharton's working practices which will be of crucial importance for scholars.

Author Biography

SHAFQUAT TOWHEED is Lecturer in Literature at the Open University, UK. He is co-editor (with Mary Hammond) of Publishing in the First World War: Essays in Book History (2007). He is currently writing a study of international copyright law and literature, and a monograph on Vernon Lee.
