by Aeschylus (Author)

The Oresteia is the only surviving trilogy of ancient Greek tragedy and one of the foundational works of Western drama. Written by Aeschylus and first performed in Athens in 458 BC, the trilogy traces the terrible cycle of blood vengeance that follows the return of King Agamemnon from the Trojan War and the long struggle to replace personal revenge with justice under law.

The three plays-Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides-follow the tragic fate of the House of Atreus. Agamemnon returns home victorious from Troy only to face betrayal and murder at the hands of his wife, Clytemnestra. Their son Orestes later seeks revenge for his father's death, setting off a chain of violence that brings him into conflict with the ancient Furies, spirits of vengeance who pursue those guilty of blood crimes.

In the final play, the cycle of revenge is transformed through the intervention of the goddess Athena, who establishes a court of law in Athens to judge Orestes' fate. In this dramatic resolution, Aeschylus presents one of the earliest literary visions of justice shifting from private vengeance to civic law. The trilogy remains a powerful exploration of fate, justice, family loyalty, and the birth of legal order in human society.
