by Win Groseclose (Author)
The letter to the Colossians contains some wonderfully rich, Christological language. There is a richness and a depth to this book that draws you into it and encourages you to revel in the Lordship of Christ. We don't know an overwhelming amount of details about the background of this church and letter. We do know that the church was not founded by Paul, but by Epaphras, who was a native of Colossae, and that this letter was probably written in the late 50s or early 60s to address false teachings that had entered into the church. One thing that is very important to note is that the city of Colossae is very close to Laodicea and when you see some of the problems that Paul is addressing in this church, it helps you to understand how the Laodicean church could have fallen to the point that they fell to. Yet, ultimately, one of the most glorious things about this book is not its moral or household codes, but its powerful statement of the deity of Christ.
