Welcome to a rich and enjoyable assortment of water-related essays written for a weekly column, "The Water Closet," by the Middleton Stream Team and published from January, 2006, through December, 2011, in the Tri-Town Transcript, a community paper serving the Ipswich River watershed towns of Middleton, Boxford and Topsfield, Massachusetts. The Middleton Stream Team is an active volunteer group with the broad purposes of environmental stewardship, conservation, advocacy, public service and education. The essays and information provided span all these purposes.
Author Biography
About the Author: Pike Messenger grew up on a subsistence farm in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Salt marshes and the Merrimack River were his playgrounds. After college he served aboard two Navy ships for five years in the western Pacific. He went on to teach high school biology for 30 years, 22 at Triton Regional School on the Parker River estuary. In Middleton, he and good wife Chitose raised three children. After teaching he served as his town's conservation agent for 14 years. He is an active member of the Middleton Stream Team, the Ipswich River Watershed Association, and the Essex County Greenbelt Association.
