by Nan Yielding (Author)
At the beginning of the book is this quote: If you're going to put all your faith into something, you need to thoroughly examine it to make sure your faith is justified.
Polls have repeatedly shown that only a small number of Christians ever read their bibles. As a result, any knowledge they possess about such familiar topics as the Resurrection ... Satan ... Hell ... the Antichrist ... Armageddon is, more likely than not, based on what they have heard in Sunday morning sermons and/or Sunday School/Catechism classes. Few know the history behind the doctrines they profess to live by and even fewer are familiar with how Christianity actually got started.
This book is an attempt to open up new learning pathways and to help believers more fully understand what they believe and why. The material will be especially valuable to Christians who may be struggling with feelings of guilt, fear, doubts, or misgivings about their faith in that it addresses many of the more troubling doctrines and traditions of Christianity. Even devout Christians may discover new information about their faith.
There is little doubt many parts of the book will be unsettling to some. However, when read with an open and inquiring mind, it could result in a new and exciting spiritual experience.
The author does not claim to be a bible scholar or historian. The information she shares is based on several years of extensive reading and research. There are nearly 200 reference notes, numerous scripture quotes, and a substantial bibliography.
Author Biography
Nan Yielding has always loved to write. As a youngster, she was constantly writing letters and notes to family ... friends ... the dog ... the cat. As a teenager, she tried her hand at science-fiction and wrote a short story about extraterrestrial visitors. Unfortunately the manuscript long ago disappeared or who knows? It might have been on Amazon.com today! During college, she took a creative writing class and created several poems. One even won an award! Nan's jobs in the corporate world nearly always involved some sort of writing, mostly technical stuff. In 1998, based on encouragement from a friend, she started Writing ... Etc. and wrote (or edited) annual reports, manuals, and other business-type documents. Soon she was being asked to write marketing material for small business owners. This eventually led to the establishment of an online business (Writing-etc.com) where she wrote marketing copy for website owners. In 2007, she discontinued copywriting and turned her attention to writing a book that had been swirling around in her head for two or three years. The result is "Things I Never Learned in Sunday School." It is about her spiritual journey after leaving Christianity -- and what she learned along the way. Since publishing the book, she has redesigned her website as a showcase for new authors (like her) to promote their work. She also has another website (TheWritingDream.com) that offers tips and resources for aspiring book writers. She lives in beautiful So. Oregon among the pines.
