Scholarship on the line. Girlfriend gone. And the only person willing to tutor me is a quiet guy from the back of my economics class who said no three times before I wore him down.
I should have taken the hint. I didn't, because somewhere between the second study session and the third time I made him laugh against his will, I stopped thinking of this as damage control.
Kyle is the most interesting person I've met since I got here. He expects the worst from people and he's usually right, and I can't figure out why it matters so much to me to be the exception. I've never had to work this hard for someone's approval. I've never wanted to this badly either.
Kyle I know what guys like Jake want from guys like me. I learned that the hard way. So I said no. Twice. Then he showed up with coffee and genuine desperation, and I said yes, which was my first mistake.
My second was letting him back after the first time he hurt my feelings. My third was probably the laugh.
The problem is that Jake keeps showing up and keeps being nothing like I expected. He defends me when he doesn't have to. He notices when something's wrong and doesn't pretend otherwise. He's the first person in two years who won't let me disappear into the background, and I've been using that background to hold something I don't know how to put down yet.
I don't know what to do with any of this. I just know I stopped dreading his texts somewhere around week three.
