Whispers In The House - Paperback

by Gideon Drake Drake (Author)

Catherine McKenna keeps the plates aligned, the chairs tucked, and a fourth place set at the table each morning-because ritual is what holds grief at bay. But the house answers her: doors that open without hands, a television that hums like a throat, toys warmed as if still held. The children sit silent and perfect; a photograph of a once-happy day fractures only where his face should be.

As Catherine stitches routine together, the edges of reality come loose. Neighbors begin to question what they've seen (or haven't), a social worker arrives with papers that look like proof, and the hands inside the vents start to hum a lullaby she never taught. Catherine must decide whether the house is protecting her or hiding her, and whether the thing she buried under the birch was grief-or something that keeps returning to be held.

The question at the center of the house is simple and brutal: what did she save, and what did she let go?
