Nine-year old Ying-Ying (Jasmine) and her mother move to Los Angeles, while her father's shadow follows. Jasmine discovers unexpected consequences as she gets to know her older brother Art, makes new friends, joins the L.A. Junior Fire Department, breaks one of her mother's rules, competes in sports and in Chinese school, deals with a hostile teacher, wonders about her mother's suitor, and finds out about superstitions and faith.

Jeanne Joe is also the author of YING-YING: PIECES OF A CHILDHOOD and YING-YING 2: JASMINE BY THE BAY. She has been an actress, administrator, and teacher. Her acting credits include feature films Airport 1975 and First Monday in October; TV's Criminal Minds, M*A*S*H, Kung Fu, Harry O, The UFO Incident; theater productions at the Inner City Repertory Company and East West Players; as well as radio dramas, voice-overs, and commercials.
